WINTER RACING BLUES

Winter Racing Blues are real. Winter is not the favorite time of year for local racers in the North. For us our racing stops in September. Of course for the guys with more money they can find tracks to race at till November.

What do Northern racers do once our local tracks are closed? Usually, the first thing we do is tear our race car down so we can start working on it for next year. But, because we have been busy every weekend racing, we better take some time out for our better half. Some have very supportive partners and some have totally non-supportive partners. Those are the ones you have to make time for in the winter. Then of course you have the ones who will say ” aren’t you over this racing crap yet?” For a lot of us, racing is a family affair.

WINTER RACING BLUES LEAD TO:

There are a few who will get onto bowling leagues for the winter, but the whole team is comprised of racers. How about a pool playing team. Some will start businesses in the winter, and look really hard for a reliable person to take over for them in the spring when racing starts back up.

You have a few who will actually take a vacation in the winter to console their partner that complained about their racing all season long. Then you will have a few who will invent a new part or tool to be used on the race care or at the track.

HERE IS JUST A COUPLE OF OUR LOCAL INVENTORS!

Of course, we also have a new designer for the late model chassis. This guy is so great. I have known Rusty Schlenck for a lot of years and he just keeps taking on more projects. He is a great driver, the person to contact for set up on your chassis and now he is building chassis. He can get you just about anything you will possibly need for your racing career.

If you have never raced or even been to a dirt track you will never understand the bond that is built there.

WINTER, SPRING, SUMMER, FALL! RACING FAMILY IS ALWAYS THERE!

My racing family has seen me through some very rough times. My life took a major hit, actually, several hits, in 2018. If it wasn’t for my racing family and my kids I would have given up. I wouldn’t change the bond I have with my racing family and friends for anything in the world. When you are in need they will be there in numbers to help you.

I had a very dear friend that was in a motorcycle accident. I called a racing friend, and she talked with the drivers, and long story short, they took their helmets into the stands, and between the fans and the drivers, they raised enough money to keep his house payments made for 6 months. These people are so amazing. I have never seen the love and support I see with them anywhere.

LAST MINUTE CHALLENGES WHEN WINTER DOESN’T SEEM LONG ENOUGH!

There are always a few of us that are rushing our butts off to get the car done for the next season. Yep, got so busy doing the stuff around the house that the car didn’t quite get done. So we get on the phone with our buddies that have theirs done, and get some help on ours. They might not have theirs done either so we get on both of them to get them finished up.

Doesn’t matter how we go about it, they are done and ready to race on the first day of racing. There is always someone who thought they wanted to stop racing and changed their mind a week before racing starts. They may not be out for the first race but they will make it out as soon as possible. You will also see ones who have retired from racing for the 3rd or 4th time be right back out on the track in a year. When you race it is usually hard to stop. The only reason I don’t race anymore is that I just don’t have the money. My husband was never supportive and then he divorced me so now I have even less money. LOL

ALWAYS GROWING, ALWAYS LEARNING

Dirt track racing is an ever-growing sport. There are so many tracks all over the USA and actually, there are some in other countries too. At my home track, we have had some guys from Australia who have raced. And a couple of our drivers have gone to Australia to race. I cannot tell you enough how much I love my racing family and friends.

Each track is different, your setup may be different, your tires may be different. If you are going to race more than one track you better do a lot of training over the winter to learn how you will have to set up your car. Talk to other drivers who have raced that track. Just like anything else, it’s all about learning not just driving.
