I did not realize that there were so many different types of hair. I just learned this in doing my research for this article. Your hair type is determined by genetics. Also, your specific ethnicity does not truly determine your hair type. Your hair may be totally different from either of your parent’s hair. Your hair may be just like a Great Aunt’s or Uncle’s hair. Because, our hair is determined by genetics, just like our eyes and skin color, you can never really know for sure exactly where your hair type comes from. It is all in genetics. Thankfully, there are people like Joi who are bringing amazing products to help people with their hair care needs.
From what I have learned so far, most women know their hair type. But, not all women know the best way to care for that particular hair type. The lists below will help you distinguish your hair type.
Type 1: A, B & C
With hair type 1, your hair is usually straight. But, did you know that even straight hair has different textures? Those textures make up the various levels of Hair type 1.
- 1A hair is hair that has no bounce, no bend, and no wave. That straight lifeless hair. As a result, most people with the lifeless straight hair will get perms to get a little body and wave, if it holds.
- 1B hair is also straight, but with just a little body. Really, not hardly any, just enough to give it a little bounce and maybe some waves. With this hair type you can curl your hair without a perm most times.
- 1C hair is a blend of straight and curly. Unfortunately, this one can be prone to humidity and weather, most of the time.
Type 2: A, B & C
Hair type 1 waves are the general texture. But, the wave’s structure can vary. That is why you have the different types to determine which hair type you have exactly.
- 2A hair will usually be loose curls but straight at the crown. The wave will actually form towards the middle of the head. They are very thin, and fine, without much texture to them.
- 2B hair will also have a crown of straight hair and the wave will still start in the middle. But these curls have more bounce and are more defined into ans S shape. Therefore, these curls are more coarse and tend to be frizzy.
- 2c hair is just a total mass of curls. From the top of your head to the tip of your hair. These curls are tighter and sometimes are in the form of ringlets. The worst part with this type is that they love to frizz, and I am talking EXTREME FRIZZ.
Hair Type 3: A, B, & C
Type 3 is by far the most popular. Everyone wants to have big, beautiful, bouncy curls. This hair is full of bouncy curls, lots of volumes, gorgeous shine, and silky smoothness. It screams to the world ” I am healthy”
- 3A my favorite, the curls are springy and shiney. They have a well defined S with a soft feel.
- 3B You will have a little tighter curl than the 3A. But the curls will be from a corkscrew to beautiful ringlets. Deffinetly will have more volume with this hair and more density but also your hair will be more coarse.
- 3C hair is actually like coils. Extremely tight corksrew. Your hair will actually look like its been shortened , because they are so tight. Because of them being this tight, your hair will look more dense with greater volume.
Type 4: A,B, & C
As with most people with an ethnic background, you may fall into this hair type. We tend to use a chemical enhancement to tame or manage our curly, frizzy hair. However, with this new product, that will no longer be the case. In the meantime, let’s explore this Type 4 hair.
- 4A hair has a curl that is extremely tight with a distinct S shape. This hair type is dense with springy coils varying from wiry to fine. The hair is usually very coarse and thick.
- 4B hair is very unique in that its curls look more like a z-shape pattern with sharp edges and angles. The curl is tighter but less defined in shape. The curl strand also has a varied from fine and thin to wiry to coarse.
- 4C hair is what I have. It is very dense, thick and coarse with little definition in the curls. This hair type curl can range from super fine to wiry and coarse. However, the curls are very delicate and can be lost easily. It also tends to frizz badly.
